Klondike Middle School students in Caren Walker's FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) classes donated 18 blankets to Franciscan Hospital. A $250 grant from INSPIRE3 (INdiana Service-learning Philanthropy, Initiate, Resources to Educate, Engage, Empower) provided the class with funds to purchase the materials. The grant program is facilitated by the Indiana of School Principals and Indiana Middle Level Education Association
This is the second year Walker's eighth-grade class has taken on a community service project as part of the Klondike Middle School character education curriculum. "All the students learned the no-sewing method of making the blankets during several sessions of homeroom period," says Walker.
Students enjoyed making the blankets and an opportunity to help others. "I liked making the blankets," shared student Edith Moser. "It feels good to help others people any way I can."
