Students completing a Hexbug experiment
Neil Radtke

Hexbug Engineering introduces students to the Engineering Design Process. This lab was developed with the help of Purdue’s EngrTEAMS workshop in 2017 as part of the INSPIRE Research Institute for Pre-College Engineering. Students are asked to develop a prototype for the purpose of directing an autonomous Hexbug from point A to point B, then back to point A within a prescribed area. Of course, it won’t be that easy! They must show that their prototype can handle obstacles and a change in elevation. Student groups will design a prototype, test it, then assess their failures (no group has ever nailed it on the first try!), redesign, build, then test again. The excitement is high and the Hexbugs are extremely unpredictable!
