Students testing water samples
Neil Radtke

Students learned about water pollution and how humans are impacting water quality through things like agriculture, littering, chemical pollution, etc. To top off this section of our Human Impact unit, students learned how to use chemical water testing supplies to test water quality. They tested 3 total samples: One was a tap water sample, one came from a local creek, and one came from a pond with agricultural runoff. For each sample, students tested for dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and pH levels, all of which are factored in when trying to determine overall quality of a water body. In doing this activity, students used the observational and data-gathering skills they learned at the beginning of the year to gather and analyze several data points to help understand the overall quality of the water samples they tested.
